BIS research paper no.57. Presents initial headline findings from the 2011 Skills for Life survey, also known as the National Baseline Survey of Adult Basic Skills. The survey aims to produce a national profile of adult literacy, numeracy, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills, and to assess the impact that different levels of skills had on people’s lives. BIS commissioned this follow-up survey in 2010 to update the baseline information collected about adult literacy and numeracy and set a more functional baseline for the present level of ICT skills.

From April 2011, Jobcentre Plus managers and advisers have the flexibility to judge which interventions will help individual claimants most cost effectively. This research seeks to inform the new flexible framework.

BIS research paper no. 64. Analyses apprentices' pay in 2011. This survey has been conducted twice before in England, most recently in 2007 (URN 12/1543). Past surveys collected data on the pay levels, working hours and training of apprentices and looked at differences by framework and by demographic variables such as gender and age. The 2011 survey included two new key factors: the introduction of a national minimum wage for apprentices in October 2010; and the expansion of research to cover all four nations of the UK.
