BERR commissioned PACEC to work with industry to develop understanding of the independent design engineering (IDE) sector in two customer industries: electronics and automotive. The study found that UK IDE sector has a competitive advantage in its specific niches, tends to be high value added, is innovation and export intensive. In the electronics sector in particular, the increase in competition brought about by globalisation has led many firms to outsource and offshore design as well as manufacturing.
